Attention to detail is everything with design.

The majority of designers know this already, and I’m probably stating the obvious, but the thing that separates the good from the excellent with any design work is attention to detail. Knowing the tools for the job to create finishing touches also helps but it’s always worth looking at a design you create for a second time and thinking “How can I improve it?”.

Subtle effects are the way forward. Adding your dropshadows and bevelled edges in moderation always helps to finalise a piece of design work, but be careful not to overdo it. Many a promising design has been ruined with the bevel tool. Instead look at how a subtle reflection, or a 1 px border can change the way your design works.

Print designers typically find it hard to adjust to pixel perfect design, and aren’t used to zooming in with photoshop to get things to look perfect on screen. This is something they simply don’t have to worry about in the print world. So if you are making the adjustment to the web, start getting in closer..look at everything with a magnifying glass, and think how to improve it. Also take care when creating graphics for the web not to over compress them, and use GIFs , PNGs and JPEGs appropriately.
