Are you shooting yourself in the foot? Don’t monetize too early.

Monetizing a blog too quickly can spell disaster.  If you manage to keep your site ad and revenue free for as long as possible, chances are your personal brand (you) will have much more credibility in the future. Take a look at any of the major large startups (particularly Web2.0 startups) and you’ll see a recurring pattern.

Build first. Monetize second.

Myspace and Youtube are perfect examples of companies that have done this successfully. Both companies always had the potential to monetize early and reap the reward, but emphasis was put on the product, the users and the experience.

As a result, exponential growth occured, and made the potential for an investor to monetize was ever more attractive. Advertising at present on the web is increasingly becoming the web’s street corner grafitti, the interested  people look, and everyone else says what an eyesore it is. Don’t damage your brand by cluttering your site with ads, simply because people will refuse to return. If you have a interesting site, with good content and repeat visitors, then the opportunity to monetize with a large audience will come at a later date, and it may prove to be more attractive to your visitors.
