Rethinking your strategy, and why the long tail converts better.

So you’ve developed your site, and have a particular keyword phrase in mind that you feel will bring significant appropriate traffic for your business, after all you’ve researched the keyword with Wordtracker, and it appears to get good traffic. Its highly competitive, the majority of your competitors are chasing it, and it will probably either require an investment in a linking strategy, or a paid Adwords position.
Is it a good idea to go after it? Probably not. Theres a great post over at Lunametics that proves why longer keyword phrases convert better. For example if someone searches for a “Dell computer”, they are probably researching that product (generally). Searches for “Dell computer” probably results in thousands of visitors daily if you appear in the top ten search engine results pages (commonly referred to as SERPS), which is all well and good if you have unlimited bandwith. However If someone searches for a “Dell computer under £500 in Belfast”, they are a much hotter prospect, and are in a position to part with their hard earned dough.
So how can you apply this to your business model online? Perform keyword research on the major terms, to get back information on sub terms, apply these to your site (blog posts, articles, products)..and hopefully watch the visitors roll..
