Politics 2.0. What irish politians can learn from Obama.
View all posts by Paul AnthonyObama is the new age Internet President. He is to the Internet what Carter was to the radio. Grab the latest technology and run with it quickly. The timing was right for a young and dynamic leader to embrace the web social media, video, and computer games to shake things up. In fact Obama’s administration team had social media profiles put together even before it was announced he was running for president.
Right from the outset Obama’s team went after one of the most powerful advertising and marketing mediums there is - The Web, and rose well above their rivals, who were always playing catch up.
It seems that if you want to reach the youth of today - choose your channels carefully, and hit the ground running to achieve an advantage and momentum over your competition.
And it wasn’t just an empty promise to get into office - post election website Change.gov carries the message, that American’s can shape the future- being empowered to express their ideas through the web.
It seems that open source politics are here to stay. If America is a marker, we can expect to see this filter (slowly) across to us on this side of the pond. It will be interesting to see how Irish politics is shaped by this in the years to come. If some of our major party websites are anything to go by, it will be a while before we see any irish politians on Twitter. Social Interaction = zero.
Maybe the reason we were excited was that for once, youth over experience reined, and with that the opportunity for youthful policies.
Number10.gov is at least trying. The site now uses Wordpress. and has seen traffic grow since the new launch. The direction is right, and the implementation better. A young team at the marketing helm no doubt.

Again take a look at Irish politics. No one under the age of 30 to be seen at the helm. Maybe this is why we are all so apathetic. Piaras Kelly has a great post on why no one cares about politics over here too.
